A rear view of bleak houses in the suburbs, a still-life of roofs and chimneys, involves more than a simple portrayal of buildings, and represents more than a characteristic picture of the misery of the cultural waste-land which the city dweller must face - transferring what has been observed from everyday reality onto a black and white surface causes us to seek out interesting stimuli which we had previously passed by without noticing.
