Further development of photography is the ‘birth’ of a negative. That most truthful witness became a particular soul of photography and up to the present fulfills the role of the most faithful trustee of the mystery of transmitting light. The negative has never constituted an object of such interest as a print. Virtually no one was trading negatives, and its presence in life is usually restricted to lying in drawers and hiding places.
