He [Elliot Erwitt] is a workman as well as an artist. He pays extraordinary attention to detail, and does things better than anyone else. He has a wry sense of humour that never faded. He uses technique not to show off but to serve his concepts, his pictures are subject-oriented, not technically oriented.
