I’d been shy as a person at times. And when I was a young man, the camera helped me get over my shyness. I didn’t like to talk a lot, and the camera was my crutch. But after having said that, I loved people, and I still do. And there was a trick. You’d go around with no film in your camera and warm people up to the idea you’re shooting, but you’re not wasting a lot of film.
