It takes about fifteen minutes to take a portrait. People have to be very still once you have composed because they fall out of focus. I feel they have given me a gift by giving me their time. That's part of the beauty of the 10x8 camera. I think people have been trained to have their "Kodak moments" and are used to be conventions of snapshot photography. With my camera I don't have to ask my subject not to smile. The camera demands a certain gravitas and people react to it in a more serious way as it's like a formal sitting. I feel I get more out of my subjects because of the process.
